How can you walk away?

When to walk away from a relationshipHow can you walk away? I’ve had this question asked to me several times in my life. I have never had an issue with walking away from a bad situation be it a lover, friend or family member. Why some people are perplexed with this, actually perplexes me.

This is especially true in romantic relationships. I don’t care how long you’ve been dating or if it was more serious than that, if things aren’t working and they haven’t been working, what else is one to do? Do you stay and silently “hope” that things will go the way you want them to after you have begged for things to change? Do you sit by as the other person continues to conduct themselves as if your feelings mean nothing?

Let’s say you are in a relationship where you feel you are doing everything in your power to make it work. You have given 110%. You are good to your partner, you don’t bitch, you don’t cause fights but for whatever reason, they make everything impossible. They cause fights for no reason, they do everything in their power to make your relationship as difficult as possible when, in reality, it doesn’t have to be.

In the beginning, you brush it off as growing pains. After some time, you start to think, Damn! What the hell am I doing wrong? Then you start to talk to your close friends or family about the situation and you begin to realize that it’s really not you. At least you’re not going crazy right? How can you walk away from the person you have grown to love and made a part of your life?

And then the time comes that someone you love is infringing on your thoughts and challenging your beliefs so much so that you believe the only way to keep your sanity is to walk away; I’m afraid at this point, that is the only thing left to do.

While a challenge and a neighborly debate can be healthy, it’s a different story when someone tries to completely drown your convictions. We’re now playing a whole different ball game. When one person is so impossible and refuses to compromise, or if that person is completely psycho and there is no possibility for rationalizing, how can you NOT walk away?

I’ve walked away from good friends, I’ve walked away from family, and I have walked away from men I’ve loved… never to turn back, not once. I once had a good friend ask me, “How can you just walk away so easily?” My only answer is “I don’t do drama…” Not only do I not do drama, ever, I stand up for what I believe in. If you don’t agree with it, that’s fine. But don’t ever think you can change my mind to conform to your needs. I will never “conform” and nor should you! Walk away before this becomes a toxic relationship.

So, how can you walk away? EXIT, STAGE RIGHT! It’s kinda like pissing after the first beer, once you do it the first time, it comes quite easily! Stand strong for what you believe in and never conform for another’s benefit.

Stop being a pussy and allowing people to walk all over you. While you may piss quite a few people off, God knows I have and I am sure if you follow your heart you will too, but… a good friend of mine introduced me to this quote and I find it rather fitting,

“Do you have enemies? Good! That means you have stood up for something in your life!” – Winston Churchill, “The British Bulldog”.

About the author

Hi, I’m Joseph O’Connor. I am a twenty-six year old man from Texas, USA. I fell into writing about sex toys when I was looking for a way to both try new things and explore my body… Things progressed rapidly. It turns out there aren’t many (straight) men that can talk about sex the way I do without getting downright ridiculous. I’m always reading more/learning about the human body and sexual response and always looking for ways to improve my sex life (and that of those I come in contact with)
