Masturbation Myth Debunkers, part 2

We continue to debunk some of the myths that surround the act of jerking off and enjoying yourself.

Men Have to Masturbate, Women Don’t

It’s statistically true to say that men appear to masturbate more than women, but it is not due to a biological “need” on the part of men to masturbate. Female masturbation is less acceptable in society than male masturbation, therefore admitting to indulging in the act is sometimes difficult for some women to own up to – this can have a skewed effect on statistics. However, jerking off is enjoyed by both genders.

People in Relationships Should Not Masturbate

There is a certain amount of shame and stigma that can evolve if a partner is known or discovered to be masturbating during a relationship. Some people can take it as an insult, or become jealous, and this drives the other party to try and masturbate only in private.

The truth is people of all ages and social classes continue to masturbate during relationships – especially when a lot of travel away from the home is involved. Up to 40% of men continue to masturbate during marriage and 30% of women. A separate study of Playboy readers found that 72% of married men masturbated, and a study of Redbook readers found that 68% of married women masturbated. Many people continue to jerk off for many years after they’ve said “I do”.

Too Much Masturbation Is Psychologically Damaging

With very rare exceptions, frequent masturbation is not harmful psychologically. Some people can masturbate compulsively possibly due to an obsessive disorder or an emotional insecurity. With counselling they are able to overcome this problem, however, masturbating, whether it’s three times a month, or three times a day is not in any way psychologically damaging to a rational and well balanced individual.

Only Certain Kinds of People Masturbate

Statistics bear out the fact that this statement is very far from the truth. If over 90% of males and 65% of females admit to masturbating, that necessarily means that people of both sexes, all ages, and socio economic groups are busy fingering or fisting off a sly one whenever the opportunity presents itself. All kinds of people masturbate – it’s a universally loved preoccupation.

About the author

Hi, I’m Joseph O’Connor. I am a twenty-six year old man from Texas, USA. I fell into writing about sex toys when I was looking for a way to both try new things and explore my body… Things progressed rapidly. It turns out there aren’t many (straight) men that can talk about sex the way I do without getting downright ridiculous. I’m always reading more/learning about the human body and sexual response and always looking for ways to improve my sex life (and that of those I come in contact with)
