You just can’t keep a bad girl down. Sasha Grey, who rocketed from total obscurity to worldwide ubiquity in seemingly next to no time, has landed a new movie role as a Bible-wielding teen who takes a purity pledge and refuses to have sex before marriage.
The adult film star, who has appeared in over 180 porn movies in just four years, has signed up to star in new horror film ‘Hallows’ - as an unlikely virgin. Writer/director Richard O'Sullivan says, "We were going to offer Sasha another sexier role in the film, but she fell in love with the idea of playing against type, portraying the exact opposite of what the public perceives her to be."
In another twist, top Christian film star Christina Cupo will also play against type - as a heavily pierced and tattooed goth girl with a fondness for sado-masochism in the movie.
Born in Sacramento California in 1988, Sasha Grey began appearing in porn films at just 18 years of age. She won several AVN awards in 2007 and 2008. She grew up in a working-class family, with her mother working for the state of California. Her father, a Greek-American mechanic, left the family when she was 5, and her mother remarried in 2000 when Grey was 12.
Sasha states that she felt miserable at home around her stepfather, and as a result at 16, informed her mother she was going to move out.
In 2009, acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh saw her in some of her flesh flicks and offered her the lead role of Chelsea in ‘The Girlfriend Experience’, and although many male reviewers are openly in awe of her, Sasha could find it tougher to convince female critics. Moira Macdonald of the Seattle Times wrote of her performance in The Girlfriend Experience:
“How do you tell the difference between an unskilled actor's flat performance and a skilled actor's realistic performance of an utterly flat character? It can be tricky, but if the question gets raised, the acting's probably to blame.”
It seems Sasha still has some way to go before everyone buys into her crossover from porn to the mainstream.
